Poems
The witness is a concatenation of the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore's transcriptions of the 1936 Facsimile Text Society reprint of the Elam Bliss 1831 volume, in that volume's printed order. The title page calls it a second edition. Six poems still loose after 1827 and 1829 belong here. Three were assigned from the witness. The other three were placed by hand, because the witness shows them and the scorer could not. The City in the Sea is headed THE DOOMED CITY; the opening "Lo! Death hath rear'd himself a throne" is the later "Lo! Death has reared himself a throne". The Sleeper is headed IRENE and opens "'T is now (so sings the soaring moon) / Midnight in the sweet month of June", not this gathering's "At midnight in the month of June". The Valley of Unrest is headed THE VALLEY NIS and opens "Far away — far away —"; this gathering starts at a later stanza, "Once it smiled a silent dell", which is on the page as "Once it smil'd a silent dell". The threshold was not lowered. Only membership is by hand. tools/books.py order placed To Helen and Israfel. A Paean is headed A PÆAN, so the corpus title is not a witness line. The City in the Sea, The Sleeper, and The Valley of Unrest keep sequence null for the same reason as their 1831 headings. Introduction (Romance), Fairy Land, Sonnet — To Science, Al Aaraaf, and Tamerlane are in the book and already sit in earlier volumes. The corpus text is still the Collier/Standard Ebooks gathering, not the 1831 page. A Paean and Lenore are separate records; Lenore is the later recension and is not this book's poem.
Numbers rank the poems whose position in the book is known; they are not page numbers.
