An Autumn Love Cycle

The book holds 58 poems in five named sections, pages 13–70: The Cycle, Contemplation, Intermezzi, Penseroso and Cadence. Penseroso and Cadence were read off the divisional title pages (the spreads before pages 53 and 65). The printed contents is set in two columns and the OCR de-interleaved it, so no title can be paired with a page from the text layer; membership and order were taken from the body. 57 were assigned from the witness. The 58th, Ivy at page 21, was placed by hand, because the witness shows it and the scorer could not: the heading is IVY and the verse begins “I am a woman…”, but the OCR fused the first two words, so the sampled opening scored 0.14 against a threshold of 0.60. The threshold was not lowered. Only membership is by hand; tools/books.py order placed it from the same witness. The witness is AnAutumnLoveCycle_djvu.txt (25,720 bytes), the first of two tesseract derivative sets in this item. The second, named anautumnlovecycle_*, is 25,188 bytes and cannot live beside the first on a case-insensitive filesystem. The scanned copy is a William & Mary library copy (stamp on the Penseroso title page). The item is a user upload, collection opensource. Joy in this book (page 26, the corpus’s Joy-2, beginning “There’s nothing certain, nothing sure”) is not the Joy already placed in The Heart of a Woman. Return in this book is the corpus’s Return, not The Return from 1918. Prejudice-2 and Promise-2 did not match this witness and stay unplaced. Celibacy: both derivative sets read “Flung to the four far ends of Earth?” where the corpus, following Standard Ebooks from the Lehigh transcription, reads “Flung to the far ends of Earth?” Recorded, not resolved. No poem’s text was taken from this scan. The order was derived from the body, beginning at THE CYCLE after the contents and the Locke foreword. Finis came out of that with no position because the word also closes the volume as a colophon after Afterglow, so the first and last occurrences disagree. The contents places Finis after Sunset, at the end of The Cycle.

Numbers rank the poems whose position in the book is known; they are not page numbers.
