The Builders, and Other Poems

Van Dyke's first collection of verse, Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, MDCCCXCVII, copyright 1897. Two of the five poems the corpus takes from it had already been printed untitled inside his prose narratives — the Chant of the Magi at the Fire-Altar in The Story of the Other Wise Man (Harper & Brothers, title page 1896, copyright 1895) and the Chant of the Northmen at the Thunder-Oak in The First Christmas Tree (Scribner's, 1897) — so those two are dated from those books by hand rather than from this volume. This is where both first appear under a title, on pages 53 and 55.

Numbers rank the poems whose position in the book is known; they are not page numbers.
