Poems, by J. D. with Elegies on the Authors Death

The witness is a Google Books scan of the 1633 first edition (STC 7045; ESTC S121864), uploaded as Archive.org donnepoems. Tesseract 5.2.0 on seventeenth-century type splits words, reads long s as f, and drops headings; tools/books.py assign still placed 106 poems at threshold 0.60 from title or opening line plus body in order. Seventeen more are on the page and were placed by hand, because the scorer could not. Five of those matched partially: Song (0.59), The Apparition (0.59), The Blossom (0.57), A Self-Accuser (0.50), and An Obscure Writer (0.50). The other twelve scored below 0.25: Antiquary, The Undertaking, A Nocturnal upon St. Lucy's Day, A Hymn to God the Father, The Indifferent, The Harbinger to the Progress, A Funeral Elegy, Satire I, Satire III, An Anatomy of the World (The First Anniversary), Of the Progress of the Soul (The Second Anniversary), and The Progress of the Soul (Infinitati Sacrum). In each case the heading and the verse are on the page. The threshold was not lowered. Only membership is by hand. The Anniversaries were first printed as pamphlets in 1611 and 1612. Archive.org has those items (ananatomyworldw00donngoog; bim_early-english-books-1475-1640_an-anatomie-of-the-world_donne-john_1612); their OCR layers did not yield a score at or above 0.25 for any poem. First located printing on a readable witness is this 1633 reprint. Poems this scan does not show were left for the 1635 witness. On 2026-08-21 a further 21 poems were placed here by hand. Grierson's 1912 edition (Archive.org poemsofjohndonne01donn_1) prints a contents list whose first column gives, for every poem, the earliest of the old editions that contains it and the pages it occupies there; his preface states that policy — 1633 where 1633 has the poem, otherwise the first edition that does. Each of the 21 was then looked for on this scan at the pages that list names, and each was found, heading or opening lines and body together. An order-free control over all 48 unplaced poems — the ten longest lines of each, matched anywhere in the text layer at 0.75 — found these 21 clustered on consecutive leaves and found nothing at all for the 27 Grierson assigns to a later edition or a manuscript, which is what makes the positives evidence rather than noise. What defeats books.py here is the scan: Tesseract on this type drops most headings, eats drop capitals (The Paradox opens '18) Lover faith' for 'No Lover saith') and breaks lines, so both the title anchor and the length filter in core.line_hits fail. The threshold was not lowered. Only membership is by hand; sequence stays null.
