    "text": "Right’s right, and the temptation to do right",

    "text": "To make it surer that I was a witch?",

    "text": "It wa’n’t no sign, I s’pose, when Mallice Huse",

    "text": "Said that I took him out in his old age",

   },
   {
    "text": "And rode all over everything on him",
    "indent": 0

    "text": "Until I’d had him worn to skin and bones.",

    "text": "And if I’d left him hitched unblanketed",

    "text": "In front of one Town Hall, I’d left him hitched",

    "text": "In front of every one in Grafton County.",

    "text": "Some cried shame on me not to blanket him,",

    "text": "The poor old man. It would have been all right",

    "text": "If some one hadn’t said to gnaw the posts",

    "text": "He stood beside and leave his trade mark on them,",

    "text": "So they could recognize them. Not a post",

    "text": "That they could hear tell of was scarified.",

    "text": "They made him keep on gnawing till he whined.",

   },

    "text": "Then that same smarty someone said to look⁠—",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "He’d bet Huse was a cribber and had gnawed",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "The crib he slept in⁠—and as sure’s you’re born",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "They found he’d gnawed the four posts of his bed,",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "All four of them to splinters. What did that prove?",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "Not that he hadn’t gnawed the hitching posts",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "He said he had besides. Because a horse",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "Gnaws in the stable ain’t no proof to me",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "He don’t gnaw trees and posts and fences too.",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "But everybody took it for a proof.",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "I was a strapping girl of twenty then.",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "The smarty someone who spoiled everything",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "Was Arthur Amy. You know who he was.",
    "indent": 0
   },

    "text": "That was the way he started courting me.",
    "indent": 0

    "text": "He never said much after we were married,",
    "indent": 0

    "text": "But I mistrusted he was none too proud",

    "text": "Like, “No, she ain’t come back from kiting yet.",

    "text": "Last night was one of her nights out. She’s kiting.",

   },
   {
    "text": "She thinks when the wind makes a night of it",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "She might as well herself.” But he liked best",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "To let on he was plagued to death with me:",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "If anyone had seen me coming home",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "Over the ridgepole, ’stride of a broomstick,",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "As often as he had in the tail of the night,",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "He guessed they’d know what he had to put up with.",

   {
    "text": "Well, I showed Arthur Amy signs enough",

   {
    "text": "Off from the house as far as we could keep",
    "indent": 0

   {
    "text": "And from barn smells you can’t wash out of ploughed ground",

   {
    "text": "With all the rain and snow of seven years;",
    "indent": 0

   {
    "text": "And I don’t mean just skulls of Roger’s Rangers",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "On Moosilauke, but woman signs to man,",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "Only bewitched so I would last him longer.",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "Up where the trees grow short, the mosses tall,",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "I made him gather me wet snow berries",
    "indent": 0
   },
   {
    "text": "On slippery rocks beside a waterfall.",

   {
    "text": "I made him do it for me in the dark.",

    "text": "And he liked everything I made him do.",

    "text": "I hope if he is where he sees me now",

    "text": "He’s so far off he can’t see what I’ve come to.",
